How to use the Stock Return Calculator

Choose any supported US ticker, enter your monthly contribution or one-time investment, then adjust the holding period. Returns, CAGR, the historical price chart, and the investment breakdown will update for the selected stock. The underlying prices come from StockSifting's historical market database; available history varies by company.

SIP vs. lumpsum investing

SIP models a recurring monthly investment using the stock's annualized historical CAGR for the selected period. The calculator applies the future-value formula FV = P × [((1 + r)^n − 1) / r] × (1 + r), where P is the monthly contribution, r the annual CAGR divided by 12, and n the number of months. Lumpsum models one initial purchase as FV = P × (1 + CAGR)^(months/12).

This is a CAGR-based historical illustration, not a transaction-by-transaction backtest of monthly share purchases. Actual SIP results depend on every purchase-date price and can differ from a smoothed-CAGR model. Past performance does not predict future returns.

How to interpret the charts

The invested amount is the amount contributed. Estimated returns equal projected portfolio value minus contributions. The donut visualizes this split, annual bars show recorded calendar-year performance, and the historical price chart displays available prices for the chosen ticker. For time windows shorter than three months, the return badge displays the simple period return instead of annualizing a very short interval.

Data note: Historical adjusted prices may already reflect dividends. For a separate simulation of dividend cash flows and reinvestment, use the DRIP Calculator.
