Dividend Growth US Stocks — Companies Growing Dividend Payments Year over Year

Dividend growth stocks are companies that consistently increase their annual dividend payment to shareholders. This screen identifies US NYSE and NASDAQ companies that increased their dividend year over year. Growing dividends signal management confidence in sustainable future earnings — a company won't commit to higher payouts unless it expects to sustain them.

Dividend cuts are highly damaging to a company's reputation and stock price. Management only raises dividends when they're confident the business can sustain the higher payout. This self-selection mechanism means consistent dividend growers — Dividend Aristocrats and Dividend Kings — have historically filtered out companies with unreliable earnings. Growing dividends are effectively a management earnings forecast.

A Dividend Aristocrat is an S&P 500 company that has increased its annual dividend payment for at least 25 consecutive years. There are approximately 60-70 Dividend Aristocrats at any time. Dividend Kings (50+ consecutive years of increases) are a subset of even longer-track-record payers. This screen captures dividend growers broadly, including those building toward Aristocrat status.

Payout ratio = Dividends Paid / Net Income × 100. A payout ratio of 50% means the company distributes half its earnings as dividends. Payout ratios above 70-80% leave little room for growth if earnings stall. Very high payout ratios (above 90%) are a warning sign — the dividend may be unsustainable. The safest dividend growers have payout ratios below 60% with growing earnings.

Total return from dividend growth investing comes from three sources: (1) current dividend income, (2) dividend growth increasing future income and supporting price appreciation, and (3) dividend reinvestment compounding. Historically, dividends have contributed 40-50% of total equity market returns over long periods. Stocks that grow dividends consistently tend to appreciate in price as the market capitalizes the higher income stream.

For long-term wealth building, dividend growth typically outperforms high-yield because: growing dividends are more sustainable (backed by earnings growth), dividend growers tend to appreciate in price alongside earnings, and high yields often signal distress or payout unsustainability. The classic choice: a 2% yield growing at 12% annually vs. a static 6% yield. After 10 years, the grower's yield on cost often exceeds the high-yield stock's flat yield.

Yield on cost = Current Annual Dividend Per Share / Original Purchase Price × 100. If you bought a stock at $50 that now pays $4/share annually (up from $2 when you bought), your yield on cost is 8% — much higher than the current yield for new buyers. Yield on cost grows over time with dividend growth, rewarding long-term holders of quality dividend growers.

Consumer staples (food, beverages, household products), healthcare (pharmaceuticals, medical devices), utilities (regulated electricity and water), industrials (defense, machinery, logistics), and financial services (well-managed banks and insurance). Technology has increasingly produced dividend growers but with shorter track records. Energy and mining companies are more cyclical and less consistent with dividend growth.

Dividend reinvestment (DRIP) amplifies the compounding effect — reinvested dividends buy more shares, which generate more dividends, which buy more shares. For a 2% yield growing at 10% annually held for 20 years, the reinvestment compounding effect is dramatic. Most brokerages offer automatic DRIP programs. In taxable accounts, each dividend reinvestment is a taxable event — this may favor holding dividend growers in tax-advantaged accounts.
