Free cash flow = Operating Cash Flow − Capital Expenditure. It represents the cash a business generates from operations after paying for the investments needed to maintain and grow the asset base. FCF is the cash available to pay dividends, buy back shares, repay debt, or make acquisitions — without needing external financing.

FCF yield = Free Cash Flow / Market Capitalization × 100. A FCF yield of 5% means the company generates $5 of free cash flow for every $100 of market value. It's comparable to a bond yield — a higher FCF yield means you receive more cash per dollar invested. Compare FCF yield to 10-year Treasury yields for relative value assessment.

Earnings can be increased through accounting choices — accelerating revenue recognition, extending useful lives of assets to reduce depreciation, or capitalizing expenses that should be expensed. Cash flow is harder to manipulate because it reflects actual cash in and out of the bank. Companies that consistently convert earnings to free cash flow are demonstrating genuine economic profitability, not just accounting profitability.

Context-dependent. When 10-year Treasury yields are 2%, a 4% FCF yield offers significant premium for equity risk. When Treasuries yield 5%, the equity risk premium shrinks. (3) Pay down debt — improving the balance sheet and reducing interest expense. (4) Make acquisitions or reinvest in organic growth. Management capital allocation quality is best judged by how they deploy excess FCF.

Yes. A company growing rapidly may need to invest heavily in capex, working capital, or both — more than its operating cash flow generates. Amazon famously had minimal FCF for years while posting accounting losses. High-growth companies often show negative or near-zero FCF in expansion phases. This screen filters for positive FCF specifically to identify businesses in strong current cash generation mode.

Operating cash flow (OCF) is cash generated from business operations before capital investments. Free cash flow subtracts capex from OCF: FCF = OCF − CapEx. The difference is the capital investment required to sustain and grow the business. Asset-light businesses (software, financial services) show FCF close to OCF because capex is minimal. Capital-intensive businesses (utilities, manufacturing) show FCF significantly below OCF.

FCF yield is not directly comparable across all sectors without context. Asset-light businesses (software, payments, consumer brands) naturally produce higher FCF yield. Capital-intensive businesses (utilities, energy, industrials) require more ongoing capex and produce lower FCF yield structurally. The meaningful comparison is FCF yield versus the stock's own historical range and versus sector peers, not absolute cross-sector comparison.

FCF payout ratio = Total Dividends Paid / Free Cash Flow. A ratio below 70% means the dividend is well-covered by actual cash generation. Above 100% means the dividend exceeds free cash flow — being funded from debt, asset sales, or cash reserves rather than operations. For any dividend stock on this screen, FCF payout ratio is the most important sustainability check.

A company mid-cycle in a large capital investment program (building a new factory, expanding infrastructure) may temporarily show reduced FCF yield even though normalized FCF is much higher. This screen captures current-year FCF — for cyclically high-capex situations, compare to the 3-year average FCF yield for a more representative picture. High-capex years that compress current FCF can create opportunities if the investment is sound.
